FAQ:

    What exactly is  "Younger Member"?
A Younger Member, by ASCE National's definition, is a member of ASCE whose age is 35 & under.  In other words, to be counted on an application for national awards, participants must be 35 & under.  However, we would love to see anyone who feels like a "Younger" member!  Right now, we communicate with YMs via email and the Section newsletter.  To receive mail from the Section, you need to be a dues paying member of National and the Nebraska Section, but if you know someone who has not taken care of that but would like to be added to our email list, have them email us.

What types of things do the Nebraska YMs do?
Right now, we are focusing on the "getting-to-know-you" aspect of our Younger Member Group (YMG).  Meeting after work for drinks and dinner, having a picnic (not in the winter, of course!), and the like.  We hosted two outreach activities with the Boy Scouts Exploring program, and have had panel discussions with the two student chapters in Nebraska (UNO & UNL).  We are hoping  to set up some technical tours, too.  If you have any suggestions, contact us!

What is the Committee on Younger Members (CYM)?
CYM is a group of five people - one from each ASCE Zone and an at-large member.  Nebraska is in Zone III along with most of the middle of the country - WI, IL, MN, IA, MO, ND, SD, NE, KS, OK, TX, WY, CO, NM, and Mexico!  CYM is the official voice of the Younger Members.  They meet twice a year and are in direct contact with the Council of Vice Presidents.  CYM representatives are great resources for ideas and help.  Our representative is Eric Fisher from Houston. Try the CYM page for more information.

How do I become a member?
Become a member of the Nebraska Section of ASCE and start attending YMG events!  To become an official member of the Nebraska Section of ASCE, see the membership page of ASCE National.   To encourage a friend or coworker, to join, check out ASCE's "Member-Get-A-Member" Drive

Do I have to be a member to participate?
No, we aren't planning on turning anyone away - especially from social activities.  There may be a time when a tour or a review group is restricted to members because of a limit on the number of participants, but in general, the more, the merrier!  For example, feel free to bring spouses, significant others, or friends to our Happy Hours.  However, there are many benefits to National (and state section) membership - Civil Engineering Magazine, ASCE News, monthly section meetings with speakers from various areas of Civil Engineering, reduced conference rates, and leadership opportunities. We strongly encourage you to join the National and State organizations.

    Are Student Chapter Members welcome?
Of course!  Part of what we hope to accomplish by building an active YMG is a great relationships with our Student Chapters.  Learning about what we do as professionals can help ease the transition after graduation.  Any students that are members of ASCE National (and you should be - it's free!) are included on our email list already - if you're not, drop the YMG Chair an email.

If you have any other questions you'd like to see in our FAQ list, let us know!
